Tesla Company Introducing Robotics

Elon Musk, the chief executive of the electrical company Tesla, said he expects the company to have self-driving "robot axis" on the road by 2020.

The entrepreneur made the promise when he announced an improved microchip for his driverless vehicles.

Mr. Musk told investors that he expected regulators to approve driving in some areas for autonomous vehicles.

He added: "I am confident that I will predict autonomous robot axis next year."

Musk said he expected the scheme to work on a model similar to that of Uber or Airbnb.
The company revealed computer hardware for what he thought was "completely self-managing" in the form of the new microchip.

There are still technical and legal challenges for the driverless car, which are currently not considered advanced or roadworthy as driver-driven cars, nor safe enough for public roads.

Musk said the specially designed chip was the best available and an important milestone in self-driving.

Tesla vehicles are not as standard as needed to earn the "self-driven" tag.

Autonomy at level 4 means that a vehicle can drive itself with a person on standby, with level 5 the norm that is needed before it can be called truly autonomous.

No Tesla car is on one level so far.

Musk had previously promised that self-driving cars would be on the road in 2018.
